New paper on Language and Vision published in Neurocomputing

This article by Adrián Pastor López reports research on the use of text mining techniques in image classification via the Bag-of-Words and Bag-of-Features analogy.

This article by Victor Lopez describes a novel approach to learn subgestures by means of an evolutionary algorithm. The method is tested with DTW and HMM on benchmark data.

The article presents a detailed description and analysis of the methods developed by Pastor Lopez for winning the author profiling track of PAN 2013 and PAN 2014 challenges.



New paper about the baseline for the One-shot gesture recognition challenge

A new paper has been published online in the Journal of Pattern Analysis and Applications:

This paper describes the baseline developed for the Chalearn one-shot gesture recognition challenge. The article presents an in depth description/analysis of the method which is based on motion histograms and PCA.

The paper describes an approach for gesture and action recognition based on a vocabulary that is constructed by the maximization of intra and inter class mutual information. An extensive experimental evaluation is performed over several benchmark collections.

Open Week 2014 The department of Computer Science at INAOE (Mexico) is organizing The Open Week 2014, a five-day event targeting graduate students. The goal of the event is to open the doors of INAOE-CCC's labs to prospective graduate students. A limited number of scholarships is available for covering transportation, accommodation and food expenses. See the associated website for more information.



New Journal papers accepted 2014 New research to be published in prestigious journals. This research is product of collaborations with colleagues from ChaLearn, Universidad de Michoacan and PISIS-UANL. The accepted papers are:



2013


Award granted to Pastor López at CLEF-PAN'13 Pastor López-Monroy (PhD student directed by Manuel Montes-y-Gómez and myself), developed the method that obtained the best performance of the Author Profiling task at PAN'13. A total of 66 teams registered for the competition 21 of which submitted software for the final phase. Pastor's runs obtained the best average performance over English and Spanish corpora. Additionally, Pastor received a prize in memoriam of M. Teresa Turell sponsored by ForensicLab of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona. Pastor´s method implements second-order representations, which can capture semantic information and besides are highly efficient. The method is described in detail in the following publication:

Paper accepted for SIPAIM-2013 A paper by Pastor López (PhD student@INAOE) has been accepted for pulication at the IX International Seminar on Medical Information Processing and Analysis to be held in Mexico city in November 2013. The title of the paper is: 'Bag-of-Visual-Ngrams for Histopathology Image Categorization', and it is a result of a collaboration between INAOE (Mexico) and UNAL (Colombia).



Papers accepted for CIARP-2013 Two (out of three submitted) papers have been accepted for the 18th Iberoamerican Congress on Pattern Recognition CIARP-2013 conference to be held in Havana, Cuba. The accepted papers are:

New paper in Neurocomputing A new paper by Mario Graff has been accepted in Neurocomputing. The paper is about Models of Performance of Time Series Forecasters. The paper is available online since July 1st, 2013. July 11, 2013.



TLTAL-2013 Del 3 al 4 de Julio de 2013 se lleva a cabo el Taller Latinoaméricano de tratamiento automático del lenguaje. El TLTAL pretende reunir a la comunidad especializada en el TALH bajo el contexto específico de la Latinoamérica hispanoparlante (al menos en este primer taller). El objetivo primario es reunir a los principales grupos de investigación en el TALH y definir estrategias pertinentes orientadas, en un primer tiempo, al tratamiento del idioma español, y en un segundo tiempo, a abordar el rico contexto multilingüe propio de la región. El seminario se llevará a cabo en Puebla. July 3, 2013.



SNAIC-2013 Los días 13 y 14 de Junio de 2013 se llevará a cabo el 1er. Seminario Nacional de Aprendizaje e Inteligencia Computacional. El SNAIC 2013 es el primero de una serie de seminarios anuales de alta calidad en su rama con amplias expectativas de desarrollo en el ámbito nacional con el fin de crear lazos de colaboración para mejorar la competitividad tecnológica de nuestro país a nivel internacional. El seminario tendrá lugar en el INAOE, en Tonantzintla, Puebla. June 10, 2013.



New gesture recognition challenge (@ICMI)! A new challenge on Multimodal Gesture Recognition has just started, there is an associated workshop at ICMI 2013: The ACM International Conference on Multimodal Interaction. The challenge and workshop is organized by colleagues from Barcelona and it is sponsored by ChaLearn. June 05, 2013.



Paper accepted for UDM Workshop (@IJCAI) A paper on simultaneous gesture segmentation and recognition (with Harold Vasquez and Enrique Sucar) has been accepted (oral presentation) for the Ubiquitous Data Mining (UDM) workshop, held in conjunction with IJCAI 2013, in Beijing China.



Paper accepted for IEEE - CEC A paper of Alejandro Rosales (with Carlos Coello, Jesús González and Carlos A. Reyes) on Surrogates for Multi-Objective Evolutionary Optimization has been accepted for the 2013 Congress on Evolutionary Computation, to be held at Cancún, Mexico. The paper has been accepted for Oral presentation.




Paper accepted for WASSA - NAACL. A paper on sexual predator detection with chain and ring based classifiers has been accepted for the 4th Workshop on Computational Approaches to Subjectivity, Sentiment & Social Media Analysis, held in conjunction with NAACL at Atlanta. Paper co-authored with Esaú Villatoro, Antonio Juárez González, Luis Villaseñor and Manuel Montes




New ChaLearn Challenge on Causality. What came first the egg or the chicken?, a new challenge on causality has been launched by CHALEARN. The problem is discovering causal-dependencies among variables. Two tracks are avilable: data donation and dependency discovery. Course proposal on text-mining accepted for RUSSIR 2013. The 7th Russian Summer School in Information Retrieval (RuSSIR 2013) will be held on September 16-20, 2013 in Kazan, Russia. The proposal was submitted in collaboration with Manuel Montes. We proposed a course on novel representations for documents in text categorization.




Two journal + four international conference papers have been accepted so far in 2013. The papers report joint work with some of my colleagues, see the publications section. 2 oral presentations @IbPRIA2013 (one on model selection and another of generation of prototypes), 1 oral presentation @FLAIRS2013 (on model selection) and 1 Poster presentation @CICLing (on short-text classification). Journal papers are about sow-activity classification (C&EA) and image-result re-ranking (ISRN-MV).
