Dr. Jesús Miguel García-Gorrostieta

INAOE

I am a researcher holding a doctoral degree from the National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics, and Electronics (INAOE) in Puebla, Mexico. My doctoral thesis, titled "Textual Analysis of Arguments in Academic Writing", focuses on the examination of argumentative structures within scholarly texts.

About me

As a professor in computer science, I am deeply passionate about developing intelligent systems to support students. My doctoral project aims to propose and implement practical, innovative, and intelligent systems for teaching and learning, particularly at the higher education level, with the goal of enhancing the academic performance of both undergraduate students and educators. Specifically, my doctoral research utilizes natural language processing techniques to analyze arguments in academic writing. My papers can be seen in researchgate .

Research projects

Argument corpus

The corpus of arguments from thesis and research proposals (CATyPI) is composed of 444 sections; each section has annotated argumentative paragraphs, argumentative components, and relations. Corpus access link

Detection of argumentative paragraphs

Argument identification prototype for academic writings in Spanish. The scope of the system at the moment is only the identification of paragraphs with argumentative characteristics. Prototype access link

Assessment of argumentative paragraphs

In the prototype, we implement three models to identify argumentative paragraphs in different sections (Problem Statement, Justification, and Conclusion) of academic theses and determine their level of argumentation (low, medium and high). Prototype access link

Argument analysis course in Moodle

The Moodle system have a course of analysis of arguments with introductory material for argumentation principles, a questionnaire and the connection to the argument assessment system in the Spanish language. In the argument analysis section, the student can perform the argumentation assessment of three sections types: Problem Statement, Justification and Conclusion. Course access link
